John Joseph Hanright
artwork

b.1970

John Joseph Hanright brings a combination of vintage and contemporary ideas together to form paintings with a story, history and presence.

John Joseph Hanright was creative even at a young age constantly drawing and painting. Residing in Laguna Beach CA after high school, Hanright was exposed to California’s Contemporary Art scene which further influenced him and gave him the confidence to experiment with mixed media.

Although years later, it was a sojourn to Thailand which profoundly unearthed his ideas and conceptual style. The concept of assemblage, using the juxtaposition of “Image” and “Text” simultaneously in a single composition, proved pivotal in the development of his artwork.

Working with wax and combined abstract form in college led to breakthroughs within his paintings. Hanright uses mixed media to his strength developing a more complex meaning within his work. The incorporation of nostalgic cultural imagery with bold acrylic paint spatially unearth vintage elements as they suggest new POP and contemporary ideals. Hanright’s attention to detail is further enhanced by adding multi-layers of resin which seems to magically illuminate color and detail. Under the gloss and glisten of resin the hues are brighter and the smooth surface allows for the entire artwork to read as a richly nuanced image.

Recently the artist reflected on his art:

"My work is thought provoking, fun, sexy and inspired by experience and visuals found. This mixing of imagery and symbols in paint and/or mixed media combine to form pieces with a twist and discovery. The art can be a combination of conceptual art, American Art, pop culture and derived from life in the 50's to present day. I present bold imagery with subtleties and simplicity to contradict and poke fun of. My engagement in my works is with thought, energy and impulsive risks."
