Regina Saura
artwork

b. 1955

Regina Saura’s whimsical mixed media paintings and monoprints speak to us in a language of familiar forms: houses, chairs, flowers, bowls of fruit, tables and tricycles are intimate references to the artist’s home in the Catalan countryside of Spain. Through her inventive use of color, media, and composition, Regina transforms these objects into magical visions of everyday things.

A professional artist since 1984, Regina’s individual approach to painting and perspective are deeply rooted in her background as a graphic designer and photographer. “Brilliant, unexpected combinations of color are her speciality.” Says art historian Katherine Satorius in the introduction of Saura’s book. Regina’s fearless colors function as concentrated emotional climates, as potent manifestations of her unique euphoric view of the world. Although her subject matter has a playful quality, Regina’s approach and manipulation of her aesthetics are of extreme serious artistry.

In addition to her paintings, Regina has become well known for her innovative handmade prints. Combining traditional printmaking techniques, she has developed a very unusual approach to monotype. The artist individually embellishes each print with various combinations of collage and mixed media including torn or cut papers, pastels, paints. The effect is both exciting and provactive. To say that Saura’s art is moving is an understatement. Hailed by some as a “modern day Miro”, Saura also enjoys comparisons with notable Colorists such as Wolf Kahn and Mark Rothko.
