Gideon Tomaschoff

b. 1956

Gideon Tomaschoff was born in Jerusalem, Israel in 1956. He went on to attend Ben Gurion University in Be’er Sheva where he achieved his first degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1982.  Subsequently, Tomaschoff travelled extensively throughout Central and South America before settling in Toronto, Canada where he studied painting at Ontario College Of Art.

Tomaschoff’s lifelong inspiration came to him while he travelled throughout Mexico, Cuba and Brazil. The aged buildings in these places, weathered and worn by the elements and covered with layer upon layer of paint, each had their own unique character and history. In these surfaces, Tomaschoff saw the embodiment of time that created a physical beauty and visual intricacy through the juxtaposition of color and texture.
In his paintings, Tomaschoff uses these aged surfaces as a metaphor. He does not attempt to recreate the specific walls that he saw, but rather the process of adding and subtracting paint and glazes to create a multiplicity of color. Like the Abstract Expressionists before him, the artist embraces process, and in doing so, he transcends paint and his canvases become vast, ethereal complexities unbound by representation. To create his expansive surfaces, Tomaschoff abandons traditional painting materials and uses a variety of unconventional tools to manipulate his surfaces such as builder’s knifes and spatulas.

Tomaschoff’s artwork is exhibited across the globe, from his home city of Toronto to Dusseldorf, Germany and Tel Aviv, Israel. Newbury Fine Arts is proud to be Tomascoff’s newest gallery and sole representation in New England.
