"At this point in my career I continue to paint and sculpt the figure, as this, for me, is the best vehicle to explore the human condition. I am challenged in each work by the intricacies of composition and technique necessary to express the poetry of a moment."
Gregory Calibey (b. 1959), a true American Renaissance talent, was the recipient of three national awards in painting before finishing his secondary education. Calibey studied fine art at Wesleyan University and at the University of North Carolina, where he worked with his mentor Marvin Saltzman. After completing his courses, he experimented with a number of artistic disciplines including extensive design work in the areas of architecture and furniture. He ventured into illustration and even television production before coming to the conclusion that painting and sculpting would be his life's creative pursuit. He cites among his influences Degas, Sargent and Rodin.
Calibey’s paintings find their power primarily from his unique vision and are underscored by a masterful technique. Through an undaunted exploration of each plane and form he creates wonderful genre scenes that are both poetic and forceful. The people in his paintings are sometimes contemplative, sometimes alone in their thoughts or when grouped together they are consumed in intimate conversation. Calibey likes to experiment with energy within the space around his figures. Sometimes the texture is the source of action. One appreciates this profound narrative quality and yet must then stand back and look again to react to the incredible energy of the paint, the form, and the line. Calibey is committed to his art and to keeping his paintings fresh. He approaches each oil painting as a new challenge. The result is an extraordinary freshness in the paint surfaces and a sense of excitement in the painting process itself.
