Joseph Lorusso
artwork

b. 1966

There is some kind of underlying current that binds all people together, and I look at art- any kind of art- as a trigger for that connection. -Joseph Lorusso

Joseph Lorusso was born in Chicago, IL and raised in a traditional Italian-American family.  His parents emigrated from Southern Italy in the mid 1950s and through several trips back to Italy exposed their son to the works of the Italian Masters at a young age.  Art was always an integral part of life for the Lorusso household, thus when Joseph began showing an early interest in drawing and painting his parents nurtured and encouraged it. In high school Lorusso was chosen for a competitive scholarship to attend weekend figure drawing classes at The American Academy of Art where he later went on to receive his formal art training before attending the Kansas City Arts Institute.

While at the American Academy of Art Lorusso spent the first two years in rigorous life drawing and fundamentals classes where he learned to master the techniques of representing the human figure.  Equally as important as his formal art training was the time he spent at the nearby Museum of the Chicago Art Institute during his breaks from class. Here he was able to study the art of some of his greatest artistic influences, including Sargent, Sorolla, Whistler, Manet and Degas.

Lorusso found a sense of artistic identity through these great artists and many others.  Through these masterful works, he saw the ability to harness emotion and convey it with power and confidence, yet with delicacy and tasteful restraint.  Through the impressionists and post-impressionists he learned the gentle balance of painting realistically while also implying form through suggestive brushstroke to express the essence of an object.

Joseph Lorusso paints the figure in a way that is both timeless and evocative, offering the viewer an intimate glimpse of people as they are going through their daily life.  These insightful scenes are natural and unaffected and the artist neither idealizes nor over-glamorizes his figures. The result is relatable figures that pull the viewer into their world. The artist’s curiosity of human emotions drives him to spend hours away from his studio simply observing people and their expressions, gestures and emotions.  As a painter, he puts himself in the role of the storyteller, providing a point of departure with his paintings that the viewer can then continue with their own subjective narrative.

After teaching for many years at the Kansas City Art Institute, Lorusso now paints full time in Kansas City and leads workshops a few times a year. His work has been shown throughout the country and has won numerous awards and honours.  Fine Art Connoisseur, American Art Collector, Southwest Art Magazine and Art World Magazine are a few of many publications to write featured articles on this illustrious artist. In 2009 he was chosen for a one-man exhibition at the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art.  Newbury Fine Arts is proud to exclusively represent Joseph Lorusso in Boston.
