Tim Merrett
artwork

b. 1972

For the past decade Tim Merrett’s unique appropriation of some of the great artistic genres has challenged the viewer to re-examine the art of the past within a new context. In his genuinely innovative artworks, the contrasting styles of the old masters and the modern color field paintings are juxtaposed, creating a new, contemporary look.

Merrett’s paintings are re-interpretations of some of his favorite painters; Latour, Manet,
Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Vermeer and Van Dijck. The artist is drawn to the subtle
details of a painting and transforms them from a small element of the original artwork to
the focal point of his new paintings. He is not simply interested in mimicking the
aesthetic qualities of the original artwork but pushes himself to replicate the process in
which they were painted. Merrett explains this process, saying,

“I am always striving, most importantly, not so much (to) make an exact copy of, let’s say a Fantin Latour, but to make it feel like a Fantin Latour. That goal is always at the forefront.”

In the next facet of Merrett’s paintings, he uses contemporary techniques to create color field panels.  Using a variety of mediums including unique glazes, he builds up and sands down the surface to create brilliant color and texture.  The final artwork comes together when Merrett juxtaposes these color field panels with his historic re-interpretations.  This idea of confronting the past and the present on a single pictorial plane comes from his apprenticeship under influential painter and photographer, David Bierk. Reflecting on his own artwork, Merrett states:

"…(Although) the subject matter of my paintings has remained unchanged… the intensity by which I delve into or ‘excavate’ the great paintings of the past continues to evolve. The paintings rely on geometry and the spontaneous. Though I am drawn towards the ideas of the surrealists, I continue to succumb to the old artistic ways of order and measure. I appropriate historical images not simply to re-position or re-interpret, the paintings are more a result of a ‘Great Dig’; the found pieces are then suspended within a modern urban grid. The finished paintings are ambitious yet humble, shaking off their historical dust to reveal themselves within the primacy of color. I hope to, as Rothko once said, create a place, not a picture."

Merrett’s art has attracted international attention and is shown throughout the United States and Canada. His paintings combine elements of the past and present seamlessly, creating exquisite and engaging artworks in a genre of their own.
