The word Buddha in Sanskrit means “to be awakened”. Expressed in art, Buddhas are not objects of worship, but mirrors of our innermost being, icons of the journey from ignorance to illumination.
Artist Virginia Peck grew up in New Jersey attending George School, a Quaker school in Newtown, PA. She also took courses at the Philadelphia College of Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. Moving to New England, Peck attended The School of the Museum of Fine Arts and graduated with a degree in painting.
For 10 years, Peck worked as a freelance illustrator for clients such as Reebok, The Boston Globe, Doubleday Books and many others. After her son and daughter were grown, Peck returned her full attention to personal painting in 1997. She has been the subject of articles in The Boston Globe, The Patriot Ledger, and other newspapers and magazines. Newbury Fine Arts is pleased to represent the artist exclusively in Boston.
Virginia Peck describes that sitting in meditation one morning, she visualized the idea of the face of Buddha and knew that this was her calling. It was the culmination of a lifelong interest with her personal spiritual study, meditation and yoga and her passion for painting. The ancient Buddha statues with their weathered patinas suggesting the life cycle of decay and rebirth, impermanence and change inspired Peck to create unique surface qualities on her work.
Virginia Peck is an artist whose work engages the viewer at a strongly visceral level. Her paintings are vividly colorful and luminous with an underlying texture...Faces predominate...There is a haunting, surreal quality to many of them. They are startlingly beautiful and do not easily release your attention.
