Carol Diamond

Carol Diamond is a painter and sculptor who lives in New York City. Her newest work is predominately multimedia, and encompasses oil painting, found materials assemblage sculpture and plein air drawings. Often executed concurrently, her artworks in various media are driven by the tension and tumult of urban life. A mainstay of Diamond’s inspiration is the architectural site of New York City as seen through a subjective lens, sometimes darkly.
Diamond has presented her work in many solo and group shows both in New York City, upstate New York and nationally. Recent venues include solo shows at the Eyes on Main Street Gallery in Wilson, North Carolina, Kent State University, and the Painting Center in New York City. Originally from Cleveland, Diamond earned a B.F.A. in painting from Cornell University and continued study at the New York Studio School. Her artwork is included in public and private collections, including the Portland, Oregon Museum of Art, Amerata Hess Corp, and Safe Auto. Diamond’s work has been reviewed by Artwach, Too Much Art, Manhattan Times, and interviews with the artist have appeared in Painting Perceptions, and on WJFF Radio. Her art writing and reviews are published in Art Critical, Painters on Painting, Two Coats of Paint, and Delicious Line.
Awards, grants and residencies for her work include the Pratt Institute Professional Development Grant, a Purchase Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters’ Invitational Exhibition, the National Academy Museum’s Edwin Palmer Prize and a Vermont Studio Center Residency. Diamond teaches at Pratt Institute where she is an Adjunct Associate Professor and has served on the faculty since 2000. She also teaches graphic design at CUNY’s City College of Technology and has lectured and taught at other institutions including NYU, the New York Studio School, Lehman College and the Chautauqua Institute.
Artist Statement
"The urban experience powerfully informs my work. The wall, the built surface, city streets, and architectural forms engage me endlessly in both tactile and metaphorical ways. My fascination with construction sites, arcs and spirals, angles and overall geometry, goes back many years and continues to enrich and echo throughout my art practice. Who I am and how I feel, my past and my present, are expressed through the process of getting at these forms and spaces.
Recent works include: oil paintings on canvas; relief collage pieces made with found metal, glass, concrete, and pigments on wood; mixed media works on paper, small scale assemblage sculpture, and plein air drawings of architectural sites in New York City. These works reflect parallel threads and interweave naturally to contain my dominant interests: contrasting structures in space, textures and rhythm, and an emotion-based physicality.
There is something about how time is revealed through materials such as these that connects me to the makers and builders of things through history. There’s also the randomness of bits being left to be destroyed but actually turned into a sort of beauty; soda cans flattened by passing cars which look like gilded silver buckles; shattered beer bottles capture the light like church mosaic, yet bear the scars of being alive and cast aside.
I look at Medieval stone sculpture, gemmed pendants, iron swords, celtic relief stones, all of it resonates as emblems of time objectified. Modernism developed my ability to understand and create plastic form on the picture plane and in dimension. I look at the streets strewn with random remains and feel that through art our temporal physical existence can be infused with spiritual life."
